After teaching for many years at the University of British Columbia, Alexander Forbes moved to Kamloops, BC, where he is currently a professor of English and creative writing at Thompson Rivers University. A former member of the board of the Federation of BC Writers, he has also worked as an editor on many publications, including the University of Toronto Press journal Ultimate Reality and Meaning, where he was Canadian Literature Editor.

His poems have appeared in magazines and collections throughout Canada from British Columbia to Quebec, as well as across the United States from California to New York, and his readings have included invited appearances at the Vancouver International Writers' Festival and the Shuswap Lake International Writers' Festival. The author of many essays and reviews, he has also contributed biographies to The Dictionary of Literary Biography (Detroit) and the University of Toronto Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada. His collaborations with the painter Tricia Sellmer have resulted not only in joint exhibtions, but in the book Rumours of Bees (Red Heifer Press) and a number of gallery catalogues where the poems and paintings exhibited have been reproduced. These include Double Exposure, boppin' with Mr. Mynah, Natural Correspondences, and Sun Records & Texaco Stadiums. The Bill Miner Roadshow, an album of his poems with music by Henry Small and read by Tina Moore, has just been released on the Small World label and will soon be followed by a second Small World album with these artists. Another book from Red Heifer, After the Moon a Blue Ocean, is due for release shortly.
